Question 51-52refer to the following information.

The bad news about a slow-but-steady recovery is clear: lingering long-term unemployment, stagnant wages, and a housing recovery that is leaving many middle-income families behind. But one interesting side-effect of the boring recovery is that it puts to rest (for now) the popular fears of an AI/robot revolution taking all of our jobs. In that brave neo-industrial world, one thing you would expect to see is GDP growth rapidly outstripping employment, as robots did a bunch of work while Americans sat around waiting for federal welfare checks. Quite the opposite, in the last few years, GDP-per-worker has all but stopped growing.

What does the word “outstripping “mean?

When I opened the first "Body Shop" in 1976, what I wanted to do was to earn (挣) enough money to feed my children. Today the "Body Shop" is a great company growing fast all around the world. In the years since we began, I have learned a lot. Much of what I have learned will be found in this book, because I believe that we, as a company, have something worth saying about how to run a successful business without giving up what you really believe in.

It's not an ordinary business book. It is not just about my life, either. The message is that to succeed in business you have to be different. Business can be fun, and can be run with love and do good. In business, as in life, I need to enjoy myself, to have a feeling of my family and to feel excited by something unusual. I have always wanted the people who work for the "Body Shop" to feel the same way.

Now this book sends these ideas out into the world, and makes them public. I'd like to think there are no limits (界限) to our "family", and no limits to what can be done. I find that an exciting thought. I hope you do, too.

What is the writer's main purpose (目的) in writing this text?

  • A. To tell the reader her life story

What kind of person does the writer seem to be?

  • A. She is mainly interested in making money
  • B. She thinks running a business a different job
  • C. She seems to be successful but unhappy
  • D. She seems to be someone with strong confidence

We all know that lack of sleep affects our memory, along with other cognitive abilities. Sittingin the office, sleep deprived, it’s difficult to remember your own name, let along theever-lengthening to-do list.

But now new research shows that not getting enough sleep increases the chances your mind will actually create false memories. The study, published in Psychological Science, allowed one group of participants to get a full night’s sleep, while another had to stay up all night. In the morning they were given a series of photos that were supposed to show a crime being committed. Next, both groups were given some eyewitness statements about the crime. Like many witness statements in real-life crimes, the details were different to those shown in the photographs. For example, in

one instance the photo showed a thief putting a wallet in his jacket, but in the witness statement it said he put it in his pants (that’s ‘trousers’ for British people, not his underwear!). Afterwards, they were asked what they had seen in the original photographs. The results showed that those who’d missed out on their sleep were the most likely to regurgitate the false eyewitness statements they’d just read, rather than remembering the ‘true’ crime-scene photos they’d been

shown moments beforehand.

The lack of sleep had messed with their heads to the extent that all the evidence — right and wrong — had got mixed up.

One of the study’s authors, Kimberly Fenn, said:” People who repeatedly get low amounts of sleep every night could be more prone in the long run to develop these forms of memory distortion. It’s not just a full night of sleep deprivation that puts them at risk.” Indeed, a preliminary study they carried out found that getting just five hours sleep was enough to cause people to start manufacturing false memories.

  • A. A full night of sleep deprivation outs people on the risk of false memory

Gaining green card may involve the black market costs. The green card application process can take a long time, and people often have to eat while waiting for their papers. Many immigrants have resolved this through the acquisition of fake documents. (Note as an attorney, I emphatically do not recommend this. But people do it. A lot.) At their best (and most expensive), fake papers can be quite useful. From talking to immigrants, I have learned that there is a man in a certain Central American capital who, for $6000, will get you a U.S. passport with a name and photo of your choosing that will scan as real on border crossing computers. In New York City, $150-$200 will get you work documents connected to a real Social Security number. $75 will get you a color copy on thick paper that looks like a Social Security card as long as you don’t look closely enough to see that it is actually a “Social Security” card.

Which of the following statements is true according to the passage?

Obese people are less productive in the workplace and more prone to injury, a study claims. The researchers say their findings were so extreme that overweight people may need to take longer breaks to recover from the strains of work. They assessed how long it took for people of various sizes to perform certain tasks in the workplace. Obese people had, on average, 40 per cent shorter endurance times.

The study, conducted at Virginia Tech and the University at Buffalo in the U.S., examined the endurance of 32 people in four categories: non-obese young, obese young, non-obese older, and obese older. Each of them completed three tasks that involved a range of skills: hand grip, shoulder elevation, and a simulated assembly operation. Every task involved periods of work and rest, and included a level of activity similar to manufacturing settings.

The number of people who are obese has doubled over the past three decades-and has been linked to higher rates of workplace injury and a greater number of days of sick. ‘Workers who are obese may need longer rest breaks to return to their initial state of muscle function,’ said Dr Cavuoto. Based on the increased fatigue found

among workers who are obese, workplace designers may need to consider adding fixtures and supports to minimize the amount of time that body mass segments need to be supported. ‘We believe our results will help to develop more inclusive ergonomic guideline,’ she added. The researchers also looked at the effect of obesity and age on endurance times.

Previous research has indicated that both age and obesity hamper mobility-particularly when it comes to walking and low-energy tasks. But the researchers in this study, published in the Journal of Occupational and Environmental Hygiene, found no such link.

hours and watched the butterfly. Suddenly a small opening appeared, and the butterfly made its great effort to force its body through that little hole. Then it seemed to stop making any progress. It appeared as if it had gotten as far as it could and it could go no further.

So the man decided to help the butterfly. He cut off the remaining bit of the cocoon so that the butterfly could come our easily. But to his surprise, the butterfly got a heavy body and very small wings when it came out of the cocoon.

The man continued to watch the butterfly because he expected that the body would grow smaller at any moment and the wings would become larger and be able to fly. But neither happened! In fact, the butterfly spent the rest of its life crawling (爬) around with a heavy body and small wings. It was never able to fly.

The man was in his kindness, but he did not understand the nature rules.

Before the butterfly came out of the cocoon, fluid (流体) from its body must be forced into its wings, and then it would be ready for flying. It must have a hard struggle (拼搏) to get through the small opening to get its freedom from the cocoon.

Sometimes struggles are exactly what we need in our life. If God allowed us to go through our life without any difficulties, it would make us fail. We would not be as strong as we could have been; we could never fly.

Sometimes struggles are exactly what we need in our life. If God allowed us to go through our life without any difficulties, it would make us fail. We would not be as strong as we could have been; we could never fly.

What is the best title for the story?

  • A. The Love for the Cocoon
  • B. The Joy of Helping Each Other
  • C. The Lesson of the Cocoon
